Op-Ed Contributor Israel’s Fears, Amalek’s Arsenal
By JEFFREY GOLDBERG Published: May 16, 2009 WHEN the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, visits the White House on Monday for his first stage-setting visit, he will carry with him an agenda that clashes insistently with that of President Obama. Mr. Obama wants Mr. Netanyahu to endorse the creation of a Palestinian state. Mr. Netanyahu wants something else entirely: the president’s agreement that Iran must be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Mr. Netanyahu, in his first term as prime minister in the late 1990s, earned a reputation for conspicuous insincerity. It is therefore possible to interpret his fixation on Iran — he told me in a recent conversation that it is ruled by a “messianic apocalyptic cult” — as a way of avoiding the mare’s nest of problems associated with the Middle East peace process, especially the escalating pressure from the Obama administration to curb Jewish settlement on the West Bank. This reading of Mr. Netanyahu holds that he is, at bottom, a cynic (or, if you agree with him, a pragmatist), who will bluff vigorously but bend whenever he thinks it expedient or unavoidable. In his first term, he betrayed the principles of the Greater Israel movement by relinquishing part of Judaism’s second-holiest city, Hebron, to the control of Yasir Arafat. His pragmatism evinces itself, as well, in his apparent belief that the relationship between Israel and Washington is sacrosanct. In other words, Mr. Netanyahu, despite his rhetoric, would never launch a strike on Iran without the permission of Mr. Obama — permission that in no way appears forthcoming. But this is to misread both the prime minister and this moment in Jewish history. It is true that Mr. Netanyahu would prefer to avoid hard decisions concerning the Palestinian issue, for reasons both political (he is not, let us say, sympathetic to the cause of Palestinian self-determination) and strategic (he believes the Palestinians, divided and dysfunctional, their extremists firmly in the Iranian camp, are unready for compromise). Nevertheless, the prime minister’s preoccupation with the Iranian nuclear program seems sincere and deeply felt. I recently asked one of his advisers to gauge for me the depth of Mr. Netanyahu’s anxiety about Iran. His answer: “Think Amalek.” “Amalek,” in essence, is Hebrew for “existential threat.” Tradition holds that the Amalekites are the undying enemy of the Jews. They appear in Deuteronomy, attacking the rear columns of the Israelites on their escape from Egypt. The rabbis teach that successive generations of Jews have been forced to confront the Amalekites: Nebuchadnezzar, the Crusaders, Torquemada, Hitler and Stalin are all manifestations of Amalek’s malevolent spirit. If Iran’s nuclear program is, metaphorically, Amalek’s arsenal, then an Israeli prime minister is bound by Jewish history to seek its destruction, regardless of what his allies think. In our recent conversation, Mr. Netanyahu avoided metaphysics and biblical exegesis, but said that Iran’s desire for nuclear weapons represented a “hinge of history.” “Iran has threatened to annihilate a state,” he said. “In historical terms, this is an astounding thing. It’s a monumental outrage that goes effectively unchallenged in the court of public opinion. Sure, there are perfunctory condemnations, but there’s no j’accuse — there’s no shock.” He argued that one lesson of history is that “bad things tend to get worse if they’re not challenged early.” He went on, “Iranian leaders talk about Israel’s destruction or disappearance while simultaneously creating weapons to ensure its disappearance.” Mr. Netanyahu doesn’t believe that Iran would necessarily launch a nuclear-tipped missile at Tel Aviv. He argues instead that Iran could bring about the eventual end of Israel simply by possessing such weaponry. “Iran’s militant proxies would be able to fire rockets and engage in other terror activities while enjoying a nuclear umbrella,” he said. This could lead to the depopulation of the Negev and the Galilee, both of which have already endured sustained rocket attacks by Hamas and Hezbollah.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress, was hospitalized Wednesday after suffering an aneurysm, her spokeswoman said.
There was confusion as to Tubbs Jones' condition Wednesday afternoon, with her hometown newspaper reporting that she had passed away followed by hospital officials saying she was still alive but in critical condition.
Doctors at Huron Hospital near Cleveland determined that Tubbs Jones has "very limited brain function," Dr. Gus Kious said during a news conference televised on CNN around 2:30 p.m. "She remains in critical condition at present."
Around 1 p.m. Wednesday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer ran an anonymously sourced report that Tubbs Jones had died after being removed from life support.
A Democratic official in Washington also told reporters that Tubbs Jones died, resulting in this Associated Press NewsAlert. It was unclear where the Democratic official got his or her information, but AP killed the alert of her death when a doctor said she was in critical condition.
That post apparently became the basis for subsequent reports of her death. It was unclear whether Tubbs Jones was still connected to life support.
Tubbs Jones, 58, had the aneurysm while driving her car in Cleveland Heights on Tuesday, spokeswoman Nicole Williams said. The congresswoman's condition had been stabilized at a hospital in East Cleveland, her spokeswoman Nicole Williams said at the time.
According to a statement from police, the lawmaker had been driving erratically and her vehicle crossed from the northbound lanes across the southbound lanes.
An officer pulled a cruiser across the roadway to warn oncoming traffic. The officer reached her vehicle and found Tubbs Jones in medical distress, the statement said.
Tubbs Jones, first elected in 1998, was one of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's biggest boosters during the primaries and was to be a superdelegate at next week's Democratic National Convention in Denver.
She went to Congress from the heavily Democratic 11th District around Cleveland.

This silence is a phenomenon unknown elsewhere in the world, Discussion of the U,S, bias and its terrible consequences are common in periodicals in Britain, France, Germany, all Arab countries, and most other nations--even in Israel, whose Hebrew-language newspapers and journals regularly discuss candidly and deeply the bad behavior of Israel’s government.
Because of this silence, American citizens are denied the benefit of civilized discussion of the grievances that are believed to be the main factor leading to the dreadful assault on 9/11, the tunnel vision that prompted President George W. Bush to order war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now the drumbeat for war against Iran.
The silence obscures U,S, complicity in the awful, worsening Palestinian plight. The news coverage that reaches the U.S. public tends to demonize Muslim insurgents who protest, sometimes with terrible violence, against U.S. attempts at military occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, and similar protests by Muslim and Christian Palestinians against Israel’s U.S. -supported suppression of what is left of Palestine.
Americans seldom see reminders that Israel, with U.S.
encouragement, came into being in 1948 by the sword and has expanded its domain and carried out its destruction and humiliation of Palestinian society the same way ever since, The bias in media coverage leads uninformed people to view Israelis, not Palestinians, as the victims.
None of the three candidates for the presidency says a word about suspending aid until Israel stops its criminal acts.
A few salient facts:
According to the Christian Science Monitor, grants to Israel have cost U.S. taxpayers over $1.2 trillion since 1975, That sum includes, as it should, the cost of servicing the annual outlays as new debt.
In 1982, Israel, using U,S,-donated arms, killed more than 17,000 people in the environs of Beirut, Lebanon, In addition to the death toll, according to data compiled by journalist Alison Weir, surgeons amputated over 1,000 limbs in the aftermath of just one day’s assault.
Two years ago, Israeli forces killed more than 1,000 people in another invasion of Lebanon, Most of the dead in both invasions were civilians.
Israel now keeps 1,5 million Palestinians imprisoned in the desolate Gaza Strip, because, in a well-monitored election, they voted into power Hamas, an organization hostile to Israel’s conquests, Another two million are cordoned off like cattle behind 20-foot walls and fences in the West Bank.
In recent years, Israelis have destroyed over 10,000 Palestinians homes in East Jerusalem and elsewhere in occupied Palestine.
The invasions of Lebanon, the mistreatment of Palestinians, and the destruction of homes are crimes under international law.
None of this would have happened if any U.S. president in the last 30 years had the courage to refuse to finance Israel’s conquests, If the U.S. government had suspended financial, military and political support, Israel could not have carried out these monstrous crimes.
None of the three candidates seriously contending for the presidency says a word about suspending aid until Israel stops its criminal acts Not even the slightest hint. Indeed, each mentions Israel only with paeans of praise and pledges of unqualified support.
Why?
Fear.
Is our country fated to have another president take office next January who is afraid to challenge the lobby for a small scofflaw country the size of New Jersey?

Under the guise of urban warfare training the 26th Expeditionary Unit an elite group of U.S. Marines will conduct a martial law training exercise at 26 “surrendered” locations in central Indiana from June 4th thru the 17th. In a formal Floor speech in the Arizona Senate tomorrow (Tuesday, June 10), Senator Karen S. Johnson plans to blast Congress for their failure to defend U.S. citizens who were killed on September 11, 2001, and their failure to properly investigate those attacks.

I saw one guy on a satellite talk show and he had his own box filtering system that didnt use chemicals to clean water and he claimed to be able to clean any kind of dirty water, sewage, oils, etc etc. He did it on stage to and proved it worked. Fresh off of the 2008 Bilderberg Meeting, it looks as if New York Federal Reserve president Timothy Geithner is set to push a new agenda in the world of central banking that was likely decided upon at Bilderberg. Geithner yesterday, wrote an article in the Financial Times calling for a global regulatory banking framework. In addition, Geithner called for the Federal Reserve to have an instrumental role in this new framework. Geithner cites all of the problems that were actually created by the central bankers in the first place as the rationale for having greater centralized power. A GROUP of disgruntled Hillary Clinton supporters is using the blogosphere to maintain the rage and actively lobby against Barack Obama's run for the US presidency.
The group, calling itself Party Unity, My Ass (PUMA), emerged in the days before Hillary Clinton's withdrawal from the Democratic nomination race over the weekend and demands from the party hierarchy for her backers to coalesce behind the Obama camp in the fight against John McCain.
"We will not be bullied, brainwashed, or bossed into falling in line," the PUMAs say. One member has told NEWS.com.au: "They pushed the weaker of two candidates over the edge and will have to deal with the consequences - President McCain."
It calls for Democratic party chairman Howard Dean to be bombarded with protest emails and for outraged Clinton supporters to quit the party completely. It says "unfaithful superdelegates" - party insiders who have backed Senator Obama in states won by Senator Clinton - should have their inboxes flooded by complaints.
It also urges contributors to revoke any money they have sent to the Democratic party - a potentially telling blow as a long battle against the Republican party kicks off.
"We are protesting the 2008 Presidential Election because we refuse to support a nominee who was selected by the leadership rather than elected by the voters," the PUMAs say.
"Hillary was a candidate for the ages, historic by her very presence in the race. She inspired millions with her grace under pressure."
As attention was drawn to the site, its organisers quickly changed the acronym's meaning to People United Means Action - but its agenda shows the original name was closer to the mark.
Discovered in 2000 and now grown to 529 square miles, the Elm Coulee Field produced 15 million barrels of oil in 2005. It now accounts for almost 50,000 barrels of oil per day, about half of Montana’s crude oil production (Figure 2 [see original document]). This level of production would not have been attained without application of the most recent horizontal drilling and completion techniques.
The Williston Basin is in the north central United States, underlying much of North Dakota, eastern Montana, northwestern South Dakota, and southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada (Figure 1 [see original document]).
The Bakken Formation can be encountered throughout the Williston Basin. It is 11,000 feet deep in the depocenter (see Glossary) of the basin in the southwest corner of North Dakota. The depth of the Bakken rises to 4,500 feet deep on the eastern edge of the basin, and up to 3,100 feet deep (950 meters) on the northern edge, across the Canadian border in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
With new horizontal drilling and completion technology taken into account, the technically recoverable resource base for the entire Bakken Formation is potentially much larger. A recently published study by USGS scientist Leigh Price provides estimates ranging from 271 to 503 billion barrels (mean of 413 billion) of potential resources in place. If the potential bears out, this could (depending on recovery factors) increase the estimate of technically recoverable crude oil resources in the United States by billions of barrels. For perspective, consider that the current estimate of all technically recoverable crude oil resources in the United States, not including Bakken oil resources, is 174.67 billion barrels...

COCA-COLA, THE CIA, and the COURTS Part One of a Series by Sherman H.

From the beginning, Coca-Cola always had a trace of cocaine. Early in the 20th Century it became part of a now forgotten prosecution of the soda bubble water drink. Over the years, doctors treating stomach ailments quietly used a mixture containing Coca-Cola syrup base. Of course, NOT used by doctors, who knew the score, was the base for Pepsi-Cola, Royal Crown Cola, or for that matter, any of the other fizz drinks. Savvy sorts, when they ran short of Drano, knew to pour Coca-Cola down their home plumbing. The acids in Coke cleared the plumbing almost as good as the high-priced hardware store stuff. Nutritionists raised their eyebrows.
What does Coca-Cola do to the human plumbing?
Coke advertised with scenes of sports stars, speed boat enthusiasts, and such. To give the impression that Coke adds to a vibrant, healthy life. Yet Coke rightfully cannot make any nutrition claims. At least that is what their critics swear by and swear at.
Hey, how come Drano and other pipe-uncloggers, do not also advertise with speed boat pictures, sports stars, and such?
Some years ago, I interviewed on tape, a top official of the firm that makes the secret Coca-Cola base. That is Stepan Chemical, headquartered in the north suburb of Chicago, Northfield, and with plants elsewhere. They are the largest importer in the western world of coca leaves, used for Coke's base. A by-product, as admitted by the Stepan boss, is cocaine sold by them to the pharmaceutical industry. Does any of it also slip by as contraband? In the 1970s, some alternative journalists began heckling cocaine-linked Stepan Chemical. He said he was aware of the criticism of Stepan regarding cocaine. He could not go into it too far, he said, because of reasons of "national security". Or did he really mean, "Stepan security"? The bosses of Stepan have always been close to the Daley family that since the mid-1950s, with just a short hiatus, runs Chicago's city hall machine.
Early on in their history, The Coca-Cola Company assisted the U.S. in espionage. When the company set up bottling plants and distribution facilities in a new country, sent in were spy operatives. The place to hang their hat was the offices and plants, worldwide, of the much ballyhooed drink. The cocaine trace made it addictive. So did the sugar content, according to some nutritionist. With the U.S. Senate subcommittee hearings on Iran-Contra late in the 1980s, the CIA-Coca-Cola link was dealt with. In Nicaragua, for example, those with CIA, when the Senate subcommittee asked, where with local offices of The Coca-Cola Company. By the end of the 20th Century, Coke bought about a billion dollars a year in advertisements in the monopoly press, even more when you add up their so-called "independent" subsidiaries.
Coke reportedly uses worldwide, mafia-type strong-arms to assure distribution and wreck competitors. Such as making soda pop competitors' refrigerator units in stores to over-night, disappear. In some places it is the traditional Sicilian and Italian mafia. In other places, former Soviet Secret Police agents the KGB, like in the U.S. and current Russia, called the mafiya. Elsewhere used reportedly are the numerous Japanese underworld, the Yakuza.
Feeding on lush revenue of Coke ads, the press whores are not about to run news items or documentaries pointing out the reportedly close link between The Coca-Cola Company, covert operations of the American CIA, and the criminal cartel.
A key player, reportedly combining covert operations and the soda pop, was Roberto Goizueta. A Cuban, he started with the firm at their Havana offices in 1954. From 1980 to about the time of his death in 1997, Goizueta was at the helm of the spy-pop witches brew, operating in most every place on the globe. Through stock options he became a billionaire.
Goizueta's father was a Cuban sugar plantation dictator. Cuba was the major source of cane sugar used in the cola drink. Because of the ferment for change, needed was a new front man in Cuba. Batista, and the mafia, and the wealthy criminal families sucking the sugar blood out of Cuba, had overplayed their hand. So the American CIA, with the help of their reputed Atlanta-based adjunct, The Coca-Cola Company, installed their darling, Fidel Castro, a popular hero. When, like Frankenstein's monster, he turned against his creators, they plotted to overthrow Castro and assassinate him. It was 1961 and it was called the Bay of Pigs operation. The Coca-Cola Company and other old-time imperial firms having an entrenched interest to have Cuba as a puppet colony, participated with CIA. Aiding them was Claire Boothe Luce, wife of the boss of the Time-Life Magazine empire. With the American CIA actually since 1959, through his espionage front, Zapata Petroleum, was George Herbert Walker Bush. He aided as well the aborted mission. One of the attempted invasion vessels was named after Bush's operations. Out of official government office was Richard Milhous Nixon. In 1961, he was the overlord for the planned invasion. Blamed for the aborted invasion planned actually by President Eisenhower, President John F. Kennedy said as a punishment, he would scatter the CIA to the wind. CIA boss Allen Dulles, sacked by JFK, called him a "traitor". Some say the JFK threats against CIA led to the plot to assassinate him.
Some would simplify this story by pointing to Coke trying to change over greatly to a diet cola, as a way of breaking loose of filling the void once supplied by Cuban cane sugar, against which there was a U.S. embargo. By the end of the 20th Century, the major player in supplying the chemical sweeteners for non-Diet Coke, was Archer-Daniels-Midland. At the time of Watergate, the head of ADM was to have been prosecuted for secret participation in Nixon's covert operations slush fund. Dwayne Andreas was too useful to the American CIA for them to allow him to be jailed. Like The Coca-Cola Company in the past, by 1999, ADM had an interest in putting their claws on Cuba. Through foreign subsidiaries, ADM had big investments in operating food refineries in Cuba, to exploit their agriculture abundance. It has tremendous influence on politicians AND THE MEDIA." (Emphasis added.) So the Elian Gonzalez affair was just a smoke screen. The story quotes Forbes Magazine 2/7/2000, and their headline "ADM PREPARES FOR LIFTING OF CUBAN EMBARGO". Note ADM sponsors many of the mass media's TV talk shows as well as PBS's "Jim Lehrer News Hour". A major player in The Coca-Cola Company has been Warren Buffet. If you are naive and believe in fairy tales, then you believe he made his great fortune through crafty operation starting with a department store in Omaha. To heckle him, some of his critics pronounce his name,French-style, phonetically Buffay. Buffet became a major owner of Coke stock and held a position on their Board of Directors. Few, if any, dare even whisper that Buffet's fortune is reportedly based on operating companies that are money laundries and propaganda horns for the American CIA. Q: Why am I and many veterans, active duty, and National Guard men and women opposed to the war in Iraq?
A: Here are 10 reasons we oppose this war:
1. The Iraq war is based on lies and deception.
The Bush Administration planned for an attack against Iraq before September 11th, 2001. They used the false pretense of an imminent nuclear, chemical and biological weapons threat to deceive Congress into rationalizing this unnecessary conflict. They hide our casualties of war by banning the filming of our fallen's caskets when they arrive home, and when they refuse to allow the media into Walter Reed Hospital and other Veterans Administration facilities which are overflowing with maimed and traumatized veterans.
The United States assaulted and occupied Iraq without the consent of the UN Security Council. In doing so they violated the same body of laws they accused Iraq of breaching.
3. Corporate profiteering is driving the war in Iraq.
From privately contracted soldiers and linguists to no-bid reconstruction contracts and multinational oil negotiations, those who benefit the most in this conflict are those who suffer the least. The United States has chosen a path that directly contradicts President Eisenhower's farewell warning regarding the military industrial complex. 4. Overwhelming civilian casualties are a daily occurrence in Iraq.
Despite attempts in training and technological sophistication, large-scale civilian death is both a direct and indirect result of United States aggression in Iraq. Even the most conservative estimates of Iraqi civilian deaths number over 100,000. Currently over 100 civilians die every day in Baghdad alone.
All in service to this country swear an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. However, they are prosecuted if they object to serve in a war they see as illegal under our Constitution. As such, our brothers and sisters are paying the price for political incompetence, forced to fight in a war instead of having been sufficiently trained to carry out the task of nation-building.

6. Service members are facing serious health consequences due to our Government's negligence.
Many of our troops have already been deployed to Iraq for two, three, and even four tours of duty averaging eleven months each. Combat stress, exhaustion, and bearing witness to the horrors of war contribute to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a serious set of symptoms that can lead to depression, illness, violent behavior, and even suicide. Additionally, depleted uranium, Lariam, insufficient body armor and infectious diseases are just a few of the health risks which accompany an immorally planned and incompetently executed war. Finally, upon a soldier's release, the Veterans Administration is far too under-funded to fully deal with the magnitude of veterans in need.
The use of stop-loss on active duty troops and the unnecessarily lengthy and repeat active tours by Guard and Reserve troops place enough strain on our military families, even without being forced to sacrifice their loved ones for this ongoing political experiment in the Middle East.
8. The Iraq war is robbing us of funding sorely needed here at home.
$5.8 billion per month is spent on a war which could have aided the victims of Hurricane Katrina, gone to impoverished schools, the construction of hospitals and health care systems, tax cut initiatives, and a host of domestic programs that have all been gutted in the wake of the war in Iraq.
9. The war dehumanizes Iraqis and denies them their right to self-determination.
Iraqis are subjected to humiliating and violent checkpoints, searches and home raids on a daily basis. The current Iraqi government is in place solely because of the U.S. military occupation. The Iraqi government doesn’t have the popular support of the Iraqi people, nor does it have power or authority. For many Iraqis the current government is seen as a puppet regime for the U.S. occupation. It is undemocratic and in violation of Iraq’s own right to self-governance.
10. Our military is being exhausted by repeated deployments, involuntary extensions, and activations of the Reserve and National Guard.
The majority of troops in Iraq right now are there for at least their second tour. Deployments to Iraq are becoming longer and many of our service members are facing involuntary extensions and recalls to active duty. Longstanding policies to limit the duration and frequency of deployments for our part-time National Guard troops are now being overturned to allow for repeated, back-to-back tours in Iraq. These repeated, extended combat tours are taking a huge toll on our troops, their families, and their communities.
A: There are several reasons why immediate withdrawal is the critical first step toward solving the problems in Iraq.
1. The reasons and rationale given for the invasion were fraudulent.
There were no Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq during the time of the invasion according to US officials and former chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix. The idea that Al Qeada and the 9/11 terrorist attacks were connected to Saddam Hussein and the Baath party were proven false in the 9/11 Commission Report. Members of the Bush Administration have admitted that they “misspoke” in the run up to the war. [hANOVER fIST adds: it has also been proven beyond all prevarication that al-Qaeda never existed as a true terrorist regime...of course, some people really hate the U.S. now...!]
2. The presence of the US military is not preventing sectarian violence.
The US occupation of Iraq has proven to be unable to prevent sectarian violence and halt an escalation towards a civil war. Despite having an average of 140,000 troops in country since the occupation began, internal violence and attacks against civilians and Iraqi security forces have been on a steady incline.
3. The occupation is a primary motivation for the insurgency and global religious extremism.
The insurgency can be broken down into many individually named factions with various goals, beliefs, and techniques. However, our membership of veterans believe that the occupation of Iraq is the primary thing encouraging the insurgency and giving it legitimacy in the eyes of many Iraqis. Likewise, other people of the Islamic faith are encouraged to resist America ’s policies internationally based on how they perceive our military operations in the Middle East.
4. We can no longer afford to fight this war of choice.
The financial burden is destroying our domestic programs that could be used to protect us from natural disasters, provide medical programs, or help improve education. We are jeopardizing the US economy and putting strains on the budgets of important government agencies like the Veterans Affairs Department.
5. National security is compromised.
Funds that could be used to protect our ports and transportation are being stripped away while our National Guard units are on constant deployments instead of being used to protect and defend us here at home.
6. The world is becoming more dangerous.
International terrorist attacks have increased and it has become more dangerous for Americans to travel abroad. Approval for US policy has decreased and the dislike of Americans has increased.
7. Our national “moral authority” is being undermined.
The US has lost credibility to much of the world as the defender of liberty and freedom and our national identity is eroding. We can no longer deploy our armed forces for peace keeping measures with the good faith of the international community. We need to regain the respect and faith of the global community. This begins by withdrawing our troops from Iraq and helping the Iraqi people rebuild their country and society.
8. The majority of American citizens, Iraqi citizens and US military would like to see an immediate end to the war in Iraq.
If we are truly a democracy and we aim to create a democracy in Iraq our leaders will represent the will of the citizens and lead according to their wishes.
9. The military is broken.
We are abusing the small population of armed service members with multiple deployments while using inadequate vehicles and equipment. Less than one half of a percent of the American population is serving in the active armed forces, which is the least amount in the last century. Only 25% of the troops in Iraq are there for their first tour, while 50% are there on their second tour, and the remaining 25% are there three times or more. We continue to involuntarily extend soldiers with Stop-Loss, recall them repeatedly for additional service using the Individual Ready Reserve, and send soldiers with diagnosed medical problems into combat.

From CNN to the New York Times, the media hyped Barack Obama's Portland, Oregon rally on Sunday, some comparing him to a rock star.
Unmentioned in national reporting was the fact that Obama was preceded by a rare, 45-minute free concert by actual rock stars The Decemberists. The Portland-based band has drawn rave reviews from Rolling Stone magazine, which gave their 2005 album Picaresque four and a half stars (out of five), and another four and a half stars for 2007's The Crane Wife.
How many of the people showed up to hear Obama, and how many to hear the band?
Here's how the local paper The Oregonian, which estimated the crowd at 72,000, reported the rally:
"Obama was the biggest star at Sunday's gathering -- though a popular Portland band, The Decemberists, provided the warmup act. With blue skies and temperatures in the 80s, many in the crowd said Waterfront Park was simply the place to be."
CNN headlined its 10 p.m. segment on May 18 with "Barack Obama: Achieving Rock Star Status in Oregon."
The New York Times, which ran a color photo of the crowd, estimated the throng at 75,000, noting that it was "the largest crowd of his campaign so far." There was no mention of The Decemberists, and the Times described the weather as "an unseasonably hot day."
Indie rock Web sites were abuzz with news of the impending concert, which was also announced on the Obama campaign's Web site.

And hey, they got to see a pretty sweet opening act too. Calling themselves The Decemberists and led by lovably literate Steve Novick endorser Colin Meloy, this feisty fivepiece charmed the gathered for a good 45 minutes before Senator Obama took the stump. They even closed out with a sing-along entitled "Sons & Daughters", which had the masses joining the band to declare "Here all the bombs fade away..." Something tells me this Decemberists band is going places. Just like Senator Obama.

Indie rock's #1 candidate crush Barack Obama is sittin' quite a bit prettier than he was a few weeks ago when the Arcade Fire and Bruce Springsteen went to bat for him, but the dashing junior Senator hasn't quite clinched the Democratic party nomination yet. Next up on the primary agenda are Oregon and Kentucky, whose voters hit the polls Tuesday, May 20. Should Obama win a heaping majority of the delegates up for grabs that day, he'll be within inches of securing the hotly-contested nom.
And look who's arrived to give Obama the extra push he needs to get on the ballot in November. Why, it's none other than those kings and queens of the month after, the Decemberists!
There's nothing wrong with a candidate using celebrity power to draw a crowd, but the media have a responsibility to report their presence. By ignoring the free concert, the Times and other outlets made it appear that 75,000 people were drawn only by Sen. Obama's considerable charisma.
See? I am honest to a fault...the picture above did not truly represent a huge groundswell of support for Barack Obama, and I strove to set the record straight. For my money, Ron Paul is still my 1st pick.
The irony of George W. Bush going before the Knesset and mocking the late Sen. William Borah for expressing surprise at Adolf Hitler's 1939 invasion of Poland is that Bush's own family played a much bigger role assisting the Nazis.
If Borah, an isolationist Republican from Idaho, sounded naive saying "Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided," then what should be said about Bush's grandfather and other members of his family providing banking and industrial assistance to the Nazis as they built their war machine in the 1930s?
The archival evidence is now clear that Prescott Bush, the president's grandfather, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from and collaborated with key financial backers of Nazi Germany.
That business relationship continued after Hitler invaded Poland in 1939 and even after Germany declared war on the United States following Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941. So, perhaps instead of holding up Sen. Borah to ridicule, Bush might have acknowledged in his May 15 speech that his forebears also were blind to the dangers of Hitler.
Bush might have noted that his family's wealth, which fueled his own political rise, was partly derived from Nazi collaboration and possibly from slave labor provided by Auschwitz and other concentration camps...
If the "Trading with the Enemy Act" had been in place now...well, we'd have Donald Rumsfeld in the can, for his dealings with Saddam Hussein; Oliver North and his cronies would be dropping the soap every couple of hours, and our nation would be prosperous, rather than in the ruinous state that we're in currently.

Conservative Elizabeth Hasselbeck repeatedly attempted to question whether Bush's remarks were really aimed at Barack Obama.
She insisted, "It's not always about him," and suggested Obama is being defensive because he knows his support for talks with Iran is a weak spot
"I think the president was very clear in what he meant," Goldberg replied tartly
"The Bush administration is out there talking to North Korea, talking to Syria," noted liberal Joy Behar. "Isn't that what diplomacy is about? This guy doesn't know the difference between the word 'diplomacy' and 'appeasement.
'He's just stupid"
"One more point," continued Behar, pulling out a prepared statement. "It's very interesting and ironic that George Bush, Senior's -- er, George Bush, this one -- his grandfather -- this one -- the late -- I don't like to speak ill of the dead, but in this case it's fun -- he was a United States senator, Prescott Bush.

Okay...what's left to rant about? Oh, yes...remember Robert Dziekanski? He was TASERED TO DEATH at an airport. Well, that didn't sit well with people, so the scumbags are off to manufacture some dirt on the poor lad.
Against the better judgment of her peers (and most registered Democrats), Hillary is going to go the distance. This will ensure that no debate of the real issues facing America will take place.
But then again...what are these debates but bathroom sparring sessions; you know..."mine is bigger than yours"...well, I'll tell you what I'd like to hear at these debates:
1. Why was there such a rush to clean out Vincent Foster's office after his "death"? 2. Why did you delay the release of your finances? 3. Why do you and John McCain advocate the abeyance of a tax that actually goes to restore broken/failed infrastructure? Wouldn't a better solution for this serve WE THE PEOPLE, since the oil companies are making money hand-over-fist, that THEY take on this tax burden, since the oil companies have colluded with the car manufacturers to keep the MPG standards at a virtual standstill since the seventies? During WWII, we stopped making pennies out of copper because it was required for munitions - isn't what they're doing considered WAR PROFITEERING? 4. Why did you LIE about your "vast experience" in regards to what you purport to have over your junior colleague (and rival for the office of the President of the United States) Barack Obama? In a court of law, one lie is enough to render all relevant testimony given to be FALSE - so why should WE THE PEOPLE take anything else you have to say to be the unverifiable truth? 5. Why are you NOT INTERESTED in putting the interests of the United States of America first, second and third, over the interests of ANY OTHER COUNTRY?
This was going to be my lead article today. The FDA seems to be part of the population-reduction crowd. Why else would they, for any reason, allow aspartame and MSG to be part of ANY foodstuffs that people ingest? Aspartame is a PROVEN carcinogen and neurotoxin; MSG has caused seizures and worse in people...oh...I'll be back to complete this rant...just stay away from this crap - get off of yer butts and move around - maybe I'll start a cane sugar factory or something...but I digress.
The pharmaceutical companies lobbied and were successful in having themselves inured from lawsuit for malpractice and failed/faulty medications.
So...in other words, they can have some crap passed off as medicine, and when it completely screws up your life...YOU HAVE NO RECOMPENSE. Remember the beginning of Fight Club? What was the gist of Edward Norton's character's job?
To measure the amount of money to perform a recall on a KNOWN FAILED ITEM OR DEVICE, as opposed to the amount of potential lawsuits. In other words - PROFITS OVER PEOPLE.
Remeber - what's the main purpose of a corporation?

READER: It's been a re-assuring municipal election here in Saint John, NB.
The local paper here is run by a huge company called Irving, who basically (and almost literally) owns the city. They haven't paid proper taxes or water rates for decades, pollute with total impunity, etc. Well most of the mayors running were totally in favour of "special breaks for the great industry" including the current mayor, who literally had a secret private meeting with the Irving head guy and behind his own council's back negotiated a deal that COST the city 125 million in taxes! Naturally the local paper has all but spoon-feeding these candidates to the people, front page articles daily praising their strengths, flat out lies to help them, and reassuring the city readers that THESE are YOUR candidates. Sound familiar?
But there one guy who from day one stood up to these industries and sweetheart deals. He's in favour of industry but FAIR industry practices and deals, and refused to roll over to them in any time as counselor. The papers gave equal time thrashing him and lying constantly about him. His campaign was pure grassroots.
Last night, he WON BY A LANDSLIDE (Ivan Court), to the surprise of literally everyone in the paper and media, who were "shocked" that this "underdog" could win! In his congratulations talk on the radio this morning, he denounced the lies of the paper and asked that they work hard to "restore their integrity" and called them out on their clear bias against non-Irving friendly candidates.
The people have spoken, propaganda failed, and the grassroots candidate won easily!!! This can be reassuring to your readers on a larger scale I hope.
I'll try and find clips for you, but maybe a search on CBC will help you get relevant links to collaborate what I've said about the paper's bias, because they are certainly talking about it on the radio. Naturally the paper has nothing to say this morning...
You see...one person really can make a difference.
